The Merging of Two Great RSL Sub-Branches

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Honouring Our Veterans, One Story at a Time

Welcome to the Camberwell Pompey Elliott RSL’s Member Spotlight, where each month we shine a light on the remarkable individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving our nation. Through their stories, we celebrate the courage, commitment, and camaraderie that define our RSL community. Join us as we delve into the lives of our members, honouring their contributions and preserving their legacies for generations to come.

In a great display of collaboration, RSL Sub-Branches Tramways East Melbourne and Camberwell City have joined forces to become the Camberwell ‘Pompey’ Elliott RSL Sub Branch. Our aim is to provide the best possible outcomes for our members, who include serving and ex-service members of the Australian Defence Force, widows and their families and members of Victoria’s Emergency Services.

The Birth of Camberwell ‘Pompey Elliott’ RSL

In November 2023, the Camberwell ‘Pompey Elliott’ RSL Sub-Branch was born, driven to preserve the remarkable legacy of Harold Edward ‘Pompey’ Elliott. The Club is located on Camberwell Road not far from the City of Boroondara offices, where monthly meetings are currently chaired by our Club President, the Honorable Jeff Kennett, 43rd Premier of Victoria.

The Club’s name pays homage to ‘Pompey’ Elliott, a Boer War and WW1 veteran with extensive military experience, an inspiring and outspoken leader, and local Camberwell resident who was famously committed to looking after his fellow WW1 soldiers and their families on the home front at a time when support services were lacking.

Delivering More Services for our Members

Current Snr Vice President, and past President of Tramways East Melbourne, Michael Mosley, believes that the merging of Tramways’ substantial financial funds with Camberwell’s existing club rooms and steady income flow offered an optimal structure for the newly combined club to be a home that veterans and their families could turn to for help. We are committed to honouring and caring for those who have sacrificed so much for our nation and their families who are impacted by war.

“We welcome our Emergency Services people to become members, people who serve our communities and seek connection with others who understand their struggles”

Jeff Kennett

“The Club offers a safe and inclusive space for members to enjoy social connection and it hosts RSL Remembrance and ANZAC Day services.  Free to attend, these commemorative services welcome all who wish to pay their respects to the fallen.” Jeff continued.

A Fresh Look for a Revitalised Club

The new, revitalised Club logo includes the RSL shield as a symbol of readiness to render service to our Country and to former comrades, along with the motto ‘No-One Left Behind’. No wealth or influence can purchase the RSL badge which may be worn only by those who are members of the RSL. The Club will keep this tradition alive and work to embody the values of RSL Victoria which include:

    • Respect
    • Transparency
    • Integrity
    • Mateship
    • Tradition
    • Compassion
    • Empathy

We have also developed a new website to make applying for membership easier, to share club news, events and other important information, and to consolidate access to important resources and services that are vital to the physical and mental health of Veterans and members of the Emergency Services.
